1.29.15 Rivershore Bar & Grill - Trivia

A month ago, deep in the heart of Clackamas County, on the banks of the Willamette River, a Trivia show and a Trivia Jockey hooked up for a magical night neither would soon forget. A week later, each reluctantly returned to the site of their first encounter, desperate for more, but knowing they could wake up any moment and realize it had all been a dream. A month later, here we are, frolicking and playing Trivia like we've been together forever. I don't know about you, but Dice has quite the crush on the Trivia show at the Rivershore Bar & Grill in Oregon City.

TEAMS: Discovering that the drive is indeed worth it, BRICK (75) easily won the "Chariots of Fire" race to the finish, before putting the competition away for good with a solid league score. DEATH BY MISADVENTURE (65) was like water and filled the room with correct answers. SCHWING (63) knows that Trivia is a (slow motion) marathon, so they waited for just the right moment to make their move...the final round! Rivershore regulars and trivia aficionados VAN OWLS (54) were feeling good going into the final round...some scores should never be messed with. Dice isn't the only one that enjoys baking desserts and drinking wine out of a trophy, the STANLEY CUPCAKES (52) found a dozen ways to make Dice's night extra special!

MORE-E discovered Dice's secret to scoring on date-night...Trivia! VICTORIOUS SECRET fills everything out beautifully! The in-famous ¡THREE AMIGOS! had a plethora of right answers. A plethora? A plethora.

TRIVIA: In a nation obsessed with beauty, who would have thought Harvard's $36B would make it America's most well-endowed university? Dice would have thought it would take at least a D-cup...wait, what?

Harvard leads America's list of endowments for colleges and universities with over $36 billion invested. Yale, Stanford, Princeton, and MIT round out the top five private school endowments. With more than $20 billion invested, the entire University of Texas system has the third largest endowment of any school, while the Texas A&M University System and the University of Michigan have each put away more than $8 billion making them the top three public institutions with the largest endowments.

The earliest example of endowment comes from the Roman Empire, when Emperor Marcus Aurelius created one endowed chair for each of the four major schools of philosophy. In 1502, the first collegiate endowments were established when Lady Margaret Beaufort, grandmother of Henry VIII, established "endowed chairs" of divinity at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Henry VIII would go on to create the Regius Professorships at both universities. The endowed Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge was held in 1669 by Isaac Newton and more recently by by physicist Stephen Hawking.

Speaking of endowments...the United States is only ranked #6 in the world for highest percentage of the population to opt for some kind of plastic surgery. South Korea wins the top honor with 1-in-5 women from Seoul having undergone elective cosmetic surgery. The most common procedures in South Korea are liposuction and nose jobs, but belpharoplasty, or double-eyelid surgery, is growing in popularity to give South Koreans more Western-looking eyes. A bit surprising given the country's noted financial troubles, Greece is second on the plastic surgery list, with the majority of surgeries augmenting breast size, however Greek penile enlargements have occurred at a pace 10X greater than that of other countries on the list...It must be tough trying to overcome ancient stereotypes. Italy, Brazil, and Colombia round out the top five most nip/tuck countries in the world.

TUNES: Classic tunes rule at the Rivershore, so in honor of next week's anniversary of "The Day The Music Died," Dice spun Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper for the final round. Dice also dropped "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny, which many will remember from the closing scene of La Bamba.

Kenny Rogers & The First Edition, one of the best Trivia songs ever by The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac featuring the Spirit of Troy marching band, Steve Miller Band, Wild Cherry, Three Dog Night, Steely Dan, and even some Elvis rocked the Rivershore.

1.28.15 On Deck Sports Bar & Grill - Trivia

WE DID IT!! On Deck Sports Bar & Grill and Dice's Last Call are pleased to announce that the amazing crowd at last night's show set a new Trivia World Record for the Most "Hadouken" Performances at a Trivia Show! Incredible! God Bless America!

TEAMS: Fantasy met reality for the WET DREAM CATCHERS (90) who slept through halftime, but never let go once they grabbed the lead. No duh, GIRLS NIGHT OUT (85) like, totally know their awesome 80's music Trivia. BAR TOP (79) are the only ones that can help you with your cellphone SIM card. Last week's champs, PRESTIGE WORLDWIDE (76) thought they missed the money, but Dice likes to keep teams guessing, even after the show.

JEFF GOLDBLUM IS WATCHING YOU POOP (70), so there's that. F YOUR I (66), FYI...Jeff freaking Goldblum is watching you poop. GOOEY DUCKS (60) missed the final after playing a near perfect contest. MY COUCH SMELLS LIKE SKITTLES (57) went Beast Mode with their brilliant "Hadouken" demonstration. Dice's celebrity friends, BATMAN & ROBIN LOPEZ, MATT DAMON, and TOM BRADY & THE DEFLATABLES all watched as Jeff Goldblum took the coveted "First-Place (Celebrity)" award.

TRIVIA/TUNES: Dice loves the mash-up, so it seems only fitting that on a show without any, the recap should. Our 80's themed final question, was a treat to watch unfold as teams tried to recollect when and where they were when they heard those four awesome 80's hits.

Blondie's "Call Me" might never have been if it weren't for a record label contract conflict. Originally offered to Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks by the producer of American Gigolo, Nicks declined and Debbie Harry and Blondie were given a rough instrumental track to compose the lyrics and medley of what is arguably their greatest hit. Released in 1980, the track spent 6 consecutive weeks at #1 and was Billboard's #1 hit of the year.

Wham! featuring George Michael's literally Epic Record "Careless Whisper" was Michael's first solo single, but also was included on Wham!'s album Make It Big. Released in 1984 and peaking at #1 in 25 countries, "Careless Whisper" was the fifth best selling record of 1984 in the UK, behind two Frankie Goes To Hollywood songs, Stevie Wonder, and the Band-Aid "...Christmas?" song.


"Physical" from Australian singer, songwriter, and actress Olivia Newton-John was the single biggest selling single in the United States for the entire decade. Released in 1981, the song was originally intended for Rod Stewart, but Newton-John's version quickly rose to #1, holding the spot for 10 consecutive weeks. Billboard listed the song as #1 for the year 1982. Interestingly, the single replaced and was replaced by two hits from Hall & Oates, "Private Eyes" and "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)."


Dionne Warwick and her friends, Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder collaborated on her 1985 hit song "That's What Friends Are For." Recorded as a benefit for AIDS research and raising over $3 million for the cause, Warwick's version is actually a cover of a 1982 Rod Stewart song from the Night Shift soundtrack. The song spent four weeks at #1 and was named #61 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All Time.

Every night is a great one at On Deck, but like those 4 hit songs from the final, this one will go down as one of the greatest! Thank you!

1.27.15 Cider Mill - Trivia

TEAMS: Answering the final 15 questions perfectly, FEMBOTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO (84) added another impressive Trivia victory to their resume. PUP N' SUDS (82) fetched the right answers in the final round, nearly digging out the win. Cider Mill regulars, TRIGGER HAPPY BUNNIES (77) would like to have a few shots back, but grabbed the last gift certificate in this incredibly close competition. The Trivia team with a soccer problem, GOAL DIGGERS (75) warmed up with Trivia, scoring points from everywhere, but their final shot missed wide. CHIMP N' IT (75) got on a roll in the second-half, but were left barehanded when the roll ran out of paper late in the game. SCRATCH N' SNIFF (69) obviously had more fun than the rest of us. "O" FACE (51) reached in regulation, but forgot that high score wins.

TRIVIA: Dice prefers his toilet paper soft, two-ply, and over-the-roll...don't mess with my system. Apparently, Dice isn't the only one with "rules" about TP, although it's looking like I wouldn't have enjoyed my daily constitutional as much in history.

The first documented use of TP was noted by a Chinese scholar who presumably wrote on something other than toilet paper stating, "Paper on which there are quotations or commentaries from the Five Classics or the names of sages, I dare not use for toilet purposes..." Dice doesn't agree, as he actually finds some embossing to be both effective and somewhat enjoyable. The ancient Greeks preferred using a smooth stone...Dice says rocks, uh-uh, no way. The ancient Romans and Bill O'Reilly like a sponge on a stick...Dice says falafel is delicious and should never be used for that Bill. The Japanese just used a stick...Dice puckers at the thought. The left-hand method preferred by early Native Americans and many other cultures doesn't work for lefties...Dice happens to be sinistral, so that isn't going to work. Henry VIII had the highly respected and feared "Groom of the Stool" to keep him clean...Dice wonders if he resembles the piss boy, "It's good to be the king!"

Today, the toilet paper industry is massive, with more than 7 billion rolls of paper consumed annually by Americans. On average, each of us Americans use 57 sheets of toilet paper every day, accounting for about 27,000 trees being flushed away each and every day. Think about that next time you send your filthy paper waste on a wasted 1.6 to 3.5+ gallon freshwater journey through your septic system.

TUNES: RIP Robin Williams, thank you for the "Elmer Springsteen" impression. Air Supply, Toto, and El De Barge took us back to the 80's, and Billy Joel gave us a history lesson...in how not to rap. A pair from Dice's favorite cover band, Postmodern Jukebox, got the crowd swinging. Dice enjoyed finding old and new fan favorites with "Islands In The Stream," and "Blurred Bartman."

1.26.15 Malone's Cafe - Trivia

Dice thinks of Malone's as "Trivia's Dirty Little Secret" here in Portland. The crowd is always ready for everything Dice has to offer and then some. As usual, the Trivia at Malone's was awesome, and, as usual, Dice had a few tricks up his sleeve for those that really want to get down and dirty with their TJ!

TEAMS: (Hey Oh) listen what I say, oh...POOP CHUTE RIOT (88) knows a thing or two about getting dirty. MY DRINKING TEAM HAS A TRIVIA PROBLEM (80) admitted they had a problem or two and were cured by Dice's musical prescriptions. JV TEAM (79) aren't second-string to anyone in Trivia. SIT UBU SIT (75) knows more than most, but didn't know there's a song written about him. Falling in love with Trivia on date night, 365 (66) scored all night. BJ'S RIGHT BOOB (62) were huge, but couldn't support the weight in the end. GUACAMOLE IS A $1.95 EXTRA (61) dipped in the second half, but chipped in a bunch of 7-layers point wagers to keep it close.

TRIVIA: How many pinches in a cup? If Dice had a nickel for every time he has to call his mom to find out the answer to this question, I'd probably still be your Trivia Jockey. If you really want to impress your mom, give her a call and tell her there are 768 pinches in a cup, she'll appreciate it.

As you may have guessed by looking at me, Dice enjoys working in the kitchen. A few years ago, I found my grandma's and great-grandma's recipe boxes and embarked on the task of deciphering their handwriting, but more often their measurements. How much is a tad? A smidgen? I needed a hint, but I didn't know that a hint is a half a drop. Wait. What's a drop? HERE's a handy link to bookmark should you ever get the urge to try your great-grandmother's scrumdillyupmtious peanut butter cookie recipe like Dice did.

TUNES: Black Sabbath's "Evil Woman" didn't play games with any of our teams, but most would let her. Neil Diamond, "Crystal Blue Persuasion," and The Crystal Method classed up the joint. "Jerk It Out" from the Caesars had a few people dancing while "Cha Cha Cha" from the Ocean's 11 soundtrack made a few people guess 12, missing by a lot. Dice's advice, don't over think the music.

Dice's favorite of the night takes him back "Home" from the band Black Happy.

1.25.15 Old Barn Teams/Trivia/Tunes Recap

1.25.15 Old Barn - Trivia

There's nothing awkward about subbing at the Old Barn. Last Call's only Trivia show on Sundays brings out some of the finest teams in all of Portland for the weekly gig with Jeremiah. Dice gladly picked up the show for the week, knowing the Old Barn crowd would impress!

TEAMS: An octet of Last Call league teams dropped by the Old Barn for Sundays show, but only BRICK (80) was able to stay up late enough Saturday night to figure out the final round. KOI CLAMS (79) put some extra brainpower into finding imaginary theme rounds, despite finally working through the actual theme round! DISNEY DIRTY (74) followed up their Friday win with another solid performance by the half-sinistral team. JEHOVAHS WITNESS PROTECTION PROGRAM (72) posted another solid league score, but couldn't recover from a tumultuous fifth round. As usual, JV TEAM (71) found inspiration from Dice's music!

Possibly carrying too much confidence going in to the final round, ALLIANCE OF THAI GUYS IN BARS, had a near-perfect second half, but followed with big bet on their incorrect final. STATUS APPARATUS had three perfect rounds, but they couldn't recover from a stretch of tough questions around halftime. SIT UBU IT went for it with big points on the final, but came up short.

TRIVIA: In 1963, the Federal Bureau of Investigation were tasked with investigating the Portland, Oregon band The Kingsmen and their song, "Louie, Louie" for obscenity. Due to the immense popularity of the song among young people and the inaudible lyrics, Indiana's governor banned the song from playing and the FBI launched an investigation into the many misheard lyrics of The Kingsmen's biggest hit. Lasting for nearly two years, the investigation eventually cleared the band of the charge of interstate transport of obscene material and cemented their song's legacy as one of the greatest songs of the jukebox era.

TUNES: Kanye West vs. Weeezer sounds like a bad court case, but when mashed up, sounds amazing. Dice also dropped two songs titled "Rich Girl" and even Sir Paul's first songwriting credit, "I Lost My Little Girl" performed by The Beatles. Garth has friends in low places, they must have wagered too much on the final round. INXS, Iz, and Imagine Dragons each helped with our I-inspired halftime. Dice agrees with "The Bruce Dickinson" in thinking most songs need more cowbell. Dice's fav of the night..."Holdin' On To Black Metal" from My Morning Jacket's 2011 Circuital album.

1.22.15 Rivershore Teams/Trivia/Tunes Recap

1.22.15 Rivershore Bar & Grill - Trivia

It may seem out of character for Dice, jumping into a relationship after only three weeks, but I'm excited to officially announce a change in my relationship status. Thursdays at the Rivershore is where you can catch Dice staring dreamily at his new sweetheart of a show...

TEAMS: Aiming perfectly on their halftime and final rounds, STRAIGHT SHOOTERS (83) edged the competition on a night where a mere 2 points separated the first and last place teams going into the final. F YOUR I (82) also swept the haltime and final rounds, but F'd themselves in the third round. More than eye candy, VICTORIOUS SECRET (67) showed off a new team name and their humongous IQs!

Last week's champs, STANLEY CUPCAKES (66) colored outside the lines at halftime, joining the double-dating foursome SCHWINGS (66) one point out of the money in a tie for fourth. Rivershore denizens VAN OWLS (53), flying to the tune of "Moon River" in their heads, blew their lead on the final round, but it was totally worth it. The ITTY WITTY TRIVIA TEAM (53) would like to have the third round back...and possibly their final round wager.

TRIVIA: Note to our Trivia-writers...the people that answer Lord of the Rings questions also keep replicas of the Elven sword Glamdring in their trunks, so let's work together to keep our Tolkeinites happy and your TJ alive! Don't believe me? See here...

Did you know Coors wasn't sold in Indiana until 1991? Strange cause that's about the time Dice had his first (and last) Banquet Beer. Dice loves the Bridgeport Trilogy being served at the Rivershore right now!

TUNES: The Rivershore crowd like the tunes nostalgic, and tonight Dice delivered, spinning classics like "Ob La Di..." by The Beatles, James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," ABBA's "Mamma Mia" for the final round, as well as hits from Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. The 80's were represented by Michael McDonald, Huey Lewis & The News, Was (Not Was), and Bruce Hornsby & The Range because that's just "The Way It Is."

Dice's favorite...the Shake a Hamster Band's parody of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" called "In the Shire."

1.21.15 On Deck Sports Bar & Grill - Trivia

Seattle making the SuperBowl again is kinda a big deal for a lot of people here in the Northwest. Although officially a 49er fan (been some 'Niner love this week on some of our questions...), when my team isn't playing, I typically root for my favorite former-AFC team, the Seahawks. Especially when they're playing New England, who need to find a new team name because they're embarrassing true Patriots everywhere.

In honor of Seattle's renowned "12th Man" and the best sports bar in Portland, On Deck, I present Dice's special 12th-Man Edition of the Teams/Trivia/Tunes recap!

12 - 12th Man...12 Trivia teams. Coincidence? Dice thinks not! PRESTIGE WORLDWIDE (73) continued their On Deck success, landing the top spot in tonight's difficult Trivia contest. WET DREAM CATCHERS (72) returned to Last Call with a new team name but the same purpose...to be a Trivia nightmare to the competition. 5-SPOT (71) only missed three questions through regulation, but couldn't find the words for the art they needed in the halftime and final rounds. Falling flat at the finish, the C*** CUPCAKES (68) were looking sweet for awhile.

11 - "Crank It To 15!" is Dice's version of "Go Big or Go Home" and several teams took a page out of Dice's final round playbook tonight with max wagers. True to their name, the GOOEY DUCKS went "Omnia Extares" on the Final and slipped back into the murky Trivia waters. FARMERS ONLY DATE NIGHT would've had an easier time scoring in the barn than they did tonight. TBA never did figure out their team name, or did they? There is definitely NO SHAME in playing Trivia by yourself, but it starts to feel that way when you name your team that.

10 - Celebrity look-a-like MATT DAMON gambled away any chance of glory. CHODE TO JOY wins Dice's coveted "Best Team Name" honor. T'ES BÊTE OU QUOI? got lost in translation but Dice fancied the French! Possibly jinxing their namesake, DAME TIME left after they didn't come through in regulation.

9 - Question 9, our final first-round answer before the half, Nantucket, was also our Last Call "Hint of the Week." Be sure to visit www.lastcallusa.com every week for your hints...one of those is gonna be an answer. Dice was rather amused with his song selection... "New Age Girl" by Deadeye Dick.

8 - Jalousie windows are also known as louvre windows and consist of parallel glass panes mounted in a track system that allows the windows to be open or shut in unison maximising airflow. The design was popular in milder climates through the mid-20th Century, but was replaced by air conditioning and the more common sash and sliding windows seen today.

7 - Dice dropped The 5.6.7.8's "Woo Hoo" for our candy question. Kit Kat is wildly popular in Japan, in part due to it's name being similar to the Japanese phrase, "kitto katsu," which translates to "you'll surely win." 6 - A Trivial Pursuit question at Trivia?!? "The Warrior" from Scandal featuring Patty Smyth?!? So much yes. 

5 -  "Europa" by Globus.

4 - Did you know that tetraphobia is the fear of the number 4? Most common in China and Asia, the superstition is due to the similarity of the Chinese words for the number four and death. Tetraphobia far surpasses the Western "triskaidekaphobia" (fear of the number 13), so much so that even mentioning the number four is discouraged. Buildings and elevators in Asia are frequently designed skipping the fourth floor. As you may have guessed, April 4th is the equivalent of our Friday the 13th if we had a 13th month. 

3 - Inspired by the question, our halftime menage-a-tois of songs were each inspired by a painting. Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" drew inspiration from Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist who's life and work inspired the Salma Hayek movie Frida. Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" was inspired by Gottfried Helnwein's painting of the same name. OMD's "Night Cafe" takes inspiration from the painting that inspired Helnwein's, Edward Hopper's 1942 masterpiece "Nighthawks," and references seven of Hopper's other works as well.

1.20.15 Cider Mill Teams/Trivia/Tunes Recap

1.20.15 Cider Mill Trivia

TEAMS: VAN DE GRAF & THE GENERATORS (74) put the pedal to the metal in the final round to put away the competition. CHIMP N' IT (72), our leaders through regulation, lost at the checkered flag as they ran out of gas in the final round. FEMBOTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO (68) were slow off the line, scoring only a single point in the first round, but nearly pulled out the win with a near perfect second-half.

AT LEAST WE'RE NOT LAST (60) weren't. The Cider Mill's Trivia team with a soccer problem, GOAL DIGGERS (51) dressed the part, but their final shot missed wide dropping them from the money. KOI CLAMS made several splashes, but ultimately saw their hopes go down the drain. Newbs to Dice's twisted brand of Trivia, THE COITUS MASSACRE got off to a rough start, but figured it out at the end. TRIGGER HAPPY BUNNIES could have used a lucky rabbit's foot in the 4th round. The JABRONIS possibly predicted their own finish.

TRIVIA: As "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" played, several teams struggled to solve that galena is the primary ore of the elemental metal lead. Galena is the natural mineral form of lead sulfide and is abundantly found in deposits all over the world. In the United States, galena is the official state mineral of both Missouri and Wisconsin due to the large deposits located there. Galena deposits occasionally contain 1 to 2% silver, a byproduct which has significantly greater value than the ore and there are several notable galena mining operations primarily used to extract the silver within. Lead-acid batteries are the main use of lead today, but significant quantities are used for making lead sheets and, of course, in bullets and shot.

B-TUNES: Dice probably should have played some B.B. King... Instead, Dice busted out: Band of Horses, The Beatles, Better Than Ezra, Blue Swede, Bruno Mars, (Eric) Burdon & War, (George) Baker Selection, (David) Bowie, (Fall Out) Boy, (Grizzly) Bear, and (Third Eye) Blind. "Banana Pancakes" and the previously mentioned "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" continued the inadvertently "B"-themed music selections.

1.19.15 Malone's Cafe Teams/Trivia/Tunes Recap

1.19.15 Malone's Cafe - Trivia

Dice added several new teams to the Malone's mix this week, as we begin Week 3 of our Winter League. The newbs were quickly assimilated into our Trivia family and our show went off without a hitch (Unless you count missed questions...there were a few of those...).

TEAMS: RIP CITY (71) buried the competition like Damian Lillard in the 4th quarter, completing the improbable worst-to-first finish on the final round. Splinter Trivia team, INTERRUPTING (turtle) 66, snapped up the geniuses from a couple other teams and patiently waited for the competition to bet their way out of contention. BJ'S RIGHT BOOB (64) slipped out (of first) at the end, but were enjoyable to play with all night!

DRINKING MAKE U SMARTER (57) accidentally registered his team without a "S" proving their name true long before Dice's Trivia did. League stalwart SIT UBU SIT (56) needs to learn how to STAY. Newcomers to Malone's, MY DRINKING TEAM HAS A TRIVIA PROBLEM (52) solved most of Dice's "Tricky" questions, but a big final round wager left the room spinning. POOP CHUTE RIOT got messy in the third round, recovered through the second half, then self-defecated again on the final round. JV TEAM second-guessed themselves all night, correctly answering several questions only to cross out the right answer for a wrong one.

TRIVIA: Like the porcupine, every Trivia team stabbed themselves tonight trying to guess what a baby "spined pig" is called. Dice did his best to help, playing Smash Mouth's "Pet Names," but an anti-social ensued.

Porcupines are the third largest of the rodents (behind capybara and beavers) growing to nearly 3 feet and up to 35 lbs. They are indigenous to the Americas, parts of Asia, Europe, and Africa and every subspecies has a coat of spines or quills that are used to defend itself against pretty much everything (including themselves...). Porcupine quills have a natural anti-bacterial covering which prevents the porcupine from infection by self-inflicted injury. Typically nocturnal, porcupines are herbivores consuming leaves, twigs, and plants like clover.

TUNES: Tony Tisdale's "Catwalkin'" joined "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and "I'm Too Sexy" from Right Said Fred for our Fashion-themed halftime round. Hugo's "99 Problems" cover was fantastic on the big speakers and Sublime's "Jailhouse" got the crowd's heads bumping. "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell inspired our Romeo and Juliet answers. Dice enjoyed dropping That Handsome Devil, Natasha Bedingfield, and Devo, but his favorite of the night was Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi" from European Vacation (among others).

1.15.15 Rivershore Bar & Grill - Trivia

Seriously. Next Thursday. January 22nd. You gotta go play Trivia at the Rivershore in Oregon City. Dice's second week hosting on the beautiful Willamette River was another incredible showing from the home crowd. Dice sends much love and appreciation to the staff at the Rivershore, who work extra hard taking care of everyone!

TEAMS: STANLEY CUPCAKES (86) hoisted the big gift certificate tonight after overcoming a disastrous halftime, by completely dominating the second-half and final round. VAN OWLS (75) only missed two questions all night, but would've preferred Betty White's hip-hop, hippie to the hippie, the hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop to any of the more Beastie, Outkast artists Dice spun like Eminem. Unfortunately, the wise and witty FORCE OF ONE (66) is bidding Oregon adieu for a few months, but he'll be back cause that gift certificate he won tonight isn't good until tomorrow! BRICK (56) banged his head against the wall for a couple of ambitious wagers. Nobody puts TABLE IN THE CORNER (53) except themselves.

TRIVIA: One of the most recognizable and most popular breed of horse, the Arabian horse originated at least 4500 years ago in the Arabian Peninsula. Prized for their endurance, speed, and strength;  Arabian bloodlines can be found in nearly every modern breed of riding horse. The breed was developed and domesticated by the Bedouin people after they learned how to use the camel throughout the desert region. Arabians were spread throughout Asia and Europe through trade and the spoils of war, particularly upon the return of the victorious Crusaders. As the use of knights decreased throughout Europe, the demand for the large war horses needed to carry them was replaced by the need for the lighter and faster Arabians to support the cavalry-style attacking that was becoming more popular. This led to the strengthening of many European breeds and bloodlines and the development of several successful breeding programs throughout Europe. A second large influx of Arabian bloodlines in Europe occurred in the 1520's when the Ottoman Empire sent warriors on 300,000 pure-blooded Arabians into Hungary and Austria. The Ottomans reached Vienna before being defeated by Polish and Hungarian armies. These captured Arabians became the foundational bloodstock for much of Europe. Arabian bloodlines arrived in the Americas with the Spanish Conquistadors. Although not pure-blooded, some of these captured or escaped horses from these expeditions became part of the foundation stock of the American Mustang. Arabian bloodlines in America and Russia were further strengthened after World War II, as each benefited from the spoils of war of captured horses and the destruction of many of Europe's best breeding operations. In 1908, 71 pure-blooded Arabians were registered for the Arabian Horse Registry of America. By 1994, that number reached more than 500,000. Today, there are more American Arabians registered than the rest of the world combined.

TUNES: Apparently everyone missed "A Horse With No Name" by America ("...been through the desert...") because nobody answered that one correctly. Sugar Black's reggae cover of "Fly Like An Eagle" and Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner" helped us take off on a couple aviation-related questions. Capital Cities "Breathe," an awesome mash-up of Pink Floyd and 2Pac, joined mash-ups of Adele vs. Daft Punk and Robin Thicke vs. Bart Simpson to keep the Rivershore crowd delightedly confused! Dice's favorite of the night..."Holdin On To Black Metal" from My Morning Jacket.

1.14.15 - On Deck Sports Bar & Grill - Trivia

Climbing the stairs for Trivia at On Deck in the Pearl always feels like I'm walking into something special! Tonight, we mixed a little old with some new (this is also how Dice chooses his wardrobe most days...) and, as usual, the concoction was wonderful!

TEAMS: New to On Deck, SIX IN THE CITY (88) turned heads all over the bar with their impressive displays of Trivia knowledge. OREGON'S FINEST (82) used their perfect halftime and final rounds to capture second from a host of wannabes. BATMAN & ROBIN LOPEZ (76) wagered conservatively all night to ensure a solid league score, but should have gone big on the final. Newcomers THE A-TEAM (68) worked overtime tonight, sticking around for a little Trivia action after a successful business dinner. Things got messy quickly for ADAM BROWN STAIN LANE (48), as they failed to recapture past glory.

TRIVIA: Have you seen the video of Bruce Lee playing ping-pong with nunchucks?


Well, now you have! Guess what? As cool as it is, it's a fake. The video was created in 2008 by a Japanese ad company to advertise a Bruce Lee themed phone for Nokia on the 35th anniversary of the famed martial artist, philosopher, and actor's death.

Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco in 1940 and was raised in Hong Kong before returning to the United States at the age of 18 to complete his education eventually studying at the University of Washington. It was while living in Washington that Lee started teaching his version of martial arts. Lee eventually dropped out of college and opened several training facilities before being "discovered" by Hollywood at the Long Beach International Karate Championships.

Lee's parents actually introduced Bruce to the film and acting industry. Lee's father was a famous opera singer and actor and Bruce appered in 20 films before he turned 18. In 1966, Lee made his first appearances on U.S. televisions performing as Kato on the short-lived TV series, "The Green Hornet" and on 3 crossover episodes of the original Batman TV show. Lee's most successful acting credit is also his last, 1973's "Enter the Dragon." Bruce Lee died on July 20, 1973, six days before the release of "Enter the Dragon," likely from an allergic reaction to a prescription medicine. Interestingly, according to the autopsy, the official cause of death was "death by misadventure," contributing heavily to the many conspiracy theories surrounding his untimely death.

Lee's legacy within the martial arts community is legendary, and it's clear by the above commercial that his appeal is still as strong today as it was during his lifetime.

TUNES: "Fight to Survive" by Stan Bush from the movie "Bloodsport" was my second Stan Bush song in as many days...weird. Dice also kicked some "You're the Best Around" by Joe Esposito from the movie "Karate Kid" just to keep with the karate theme. The Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now" and Toto's "Hold The Line" held us in the 1980's, while The Dropkick Murphys, The Zambonis, and Great Big Sea gave us a hand with tonight's halftime hockey question.

Less than 24 hours after his favorite team's defeat in the inagural college football championship, Dice swallowed his tears and headed out to the Cider Mill to be among Trivia friends. Several teams quickly turned Dice's frown upside-down with their hilarious incorrect answers and, thankfully, a few even helped Dice drown his feelings in beer.

TEAMS:  Transforming Dice's playlist into points tonight, FEMBOTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO (82) made connections even Dice couldn't and ran away with the big prize! VAN DE GRAF & THE GENERATORS (75) finished the last two rounds of the contest perfectly and snagged yet another Cider Mill gift certificate. TRIGGER HAPPY BUNNIES (71) hit the target on only 2 of 10 questions through the difficult middle rounds, but found their aim true in the second half with seven consecutive correct answers to capture our final award. SCRATCH N' SNIFF (70) had no remedy for the diabolical fifth round despite covering the final question beautifully. SILLY SCALLOPS (67) were the smartest dudes in the room at times, but a slow start in the second half crushed their dreams of Trivia glory.

TRIVIA: 90210 is probably the most famous ZIP code in the entire United States Postal Service's system of codes that were designed to help organize the modern, nationwide postal service. Initially developed in the 1940's within larger urban centers, 2-digit postal zone numbers would be included on some addresses to speed up delivery. In the 1960's, the USPS had to develop a better system for dealing with a booming population and increased needs for their services. In 1963, at the same time as adopting the two-letter state abbreviations common today, the post office started using the 5-digit identification code on addresses. The first three digits of the ZIP code indicate which sectional mail facility the mail is destined for, the final two digits show exactly which postal office the mail is to be delivered from. By the late 60's, the ZIP code system had been adopted nationwide for all mail formats and the USPS even created a cartoon mascot named "Mr. Zip" to promote the new system. TUNES: Nothing inspires Dice to keep doing what he does more than when a team is able to find the connections between the playlist, the questions, and the answers. Dice has been called a "sneaky bastard" enough times to know he is one, but nothing gives me more joy than capturing a team's "lightbulb" moment. Tonight, the FEMBOTS found more inspiration than usual in Stan Bush's "The Touch" located on several movie soundtracks. Dice liked the song from the 1986 animated film "The Transformers: The Movie," but Fembots remembered Dirk Diggler brutally recorded the track in the movie "Boogie Nights," which apparently was all they needed to answer "Transformers 4." Well played Fembots, well played!

"Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf" from Rob Cantor befuddled and amused, Postmodern Jukebox's cover of "Thrift Shop" is actually enjoyable to listen to, and Florence + The Machine's "Dog Days Are Over" inspired one of the Bunnies to a spirited table-drum solo performance. Dice also discovered Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam" and the Quad City DJ's "Space Jam" are pretty much the same song.

I also really wish I would have played THIS instead of this...maybe next time.

1.8.15 Rivershore Teams/Trivia/Tunes Recap

1.8.15 RIVERSHORE BAR & GRILL TRIVIA

Dice wants to say a huge thank you to the teams that call the Rivershore home. Wow...You impressed!

TJ-ing at a new venue is usually a miss affair. Often it is awkward and weird, like an arranged first date that also happens to be the wedding night. Occasionally, however, something special happens and there is an instant chemistry that results in a bond that may end up being permanent. I've learned not to let Dice freak whenever I takeover a show, as it can take weeks or longer to figure out what a particular show needs to be successful, but the crew at Rivershore wasted no time getting into the Trivia spirit. I can honestly say, Dice and I are already excited about 7pm next Thursday!

TEAMS: Quickly learning the power of Dice's Trivia playlists, the STRAIGHT SHOOTERS (64) aimed low on the final round (wagered zero) and watched as the competition shot themselves in the feet trying to post big scores. VAN OWLS (52) outsmarted everyone through regulation, but flew into trouble in the final round with the wrong Bulldog. The ITTY WITTY TEAM (54) could have ended the night right, on top with a 69, but they tried to go deep on the final and ended up on the bottom of a significantly less pleasurable 54. FORCE OF ONE (42) sprinted out of the gates in each half, perfectly answering both the first and fourth rounds, but an ill-advised max wager on the final dropped him to fourth place.

TRIVIA: Like Scarlett Johansson, Dice and his lovely Trivia-widow escaped to scenic and rural Montana to get married. We landed way up north on Highway 2 in the tiny town of Joplin, Montana for our non-celebrity wedding. ScarJo and her husband, French journalist Romain Douriac, secretly wed last October 1 in a ceremoney in Philipsburg, Montana, located off the interstate about midway between Butte and Missoula. With luck, the County Clerk where they wed will have decidedly more skill at creating their Marriage License than ours, which required several corrections and still looks like a fake!

For this question, Dice dusted off "Relator" from ScarJo and Pete Yorn's 2009 duet album, "Break Up." Yorn conceived the album concept, "two people vocalizing their relationship through duets," in a dream and was inspired by French singer and composer Serge Gainsbourg's 1968 duet album "Bonnie and Clyde" with bombshell Brigitte Bardot. Yorn claims ScarJo is the next Bardot, but Dice is just content to keep ScarJo on his "list"...

TUNES: Everyone knows Dice takes creating the perfect playlist to absurd extremes, but like this whole show at the Rivershore, sometimes something magical happens and you get what may have been Dice's best Trivia playlist ever!

The Allan Parsons Project "Sirius" introduced Dice to the home crowd at the Rivershore. "Boom Shak-a-Lak" by Apache Indian and The Proclaimers' "Get Ready" from the Dumb and Dumber OST helped us with the Movies category. Dice surprised a few with the Trampled By Turtles' incredible cover of the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind," but the crowd returned the favor stunning Dice with their exuberance during "Zorba the Greek."

In Dice's mind, dropping the mash-up "Little Talks Wake Me Up" from Of Monsters and Men versus Avicii featuring Aloe Blacc during the Mash-up category was possibly his greatest selection of all time! It was more of a gift than I usually like to give, but I just couldn't resist.

1.7.15 On Deck Sports Bar & Grill

1.7.15 ON DECK TRIVIA

It isn't often that a Wednesday show needs to be cancelled due to schedule conflicts, but each of the past two holiday "Eves" have fallen on hump day (and Thanksgiving just weeks before that...) giving Dice days off that he probably doesn't deserve! Needless to say, it was amazing to be back among the many friends at the ON DECK SPORTS BAR & GRILL for our first Trivia show of 2015.

TEAMS: GIRLS NIGHT OUT (77) outmanned the competition, earned every bonus point and missed only 5 questions all night to secure top honors. ADAM BROWN STAIN LANE (69) coulda, woulda, shoulda wagered something on the final had they only known they aced it. OREGON'S FINEST (62) triumphantly returned to On Deck and watched the contenders stumble down the stretch.

JUST THE TIP (56) went all the way in on the final round, but plunged too deep and missed their shot at glory. BATMAN & ROBIN LOPEZ (50) benched themselves in the final, wagering everything in an effort to start the 2015 Winter Trivia League off right. NINE INCH MALES (46) and MEOW (45) didn't miss many questions, but wasted big wagers on the ones they did.

TRIVIA: The final standings of most Trivia shows frequently hinge on one or two key questions, but more often comes down to the wagering on those key questions. Tonight was no different as several teams lined up to answer "Ivory" and wager max points on the opening question of the sixth round, but each sat stunned as Dice announced that the natural material banned in 1973 and used for combs, guitar picks, and sunglasses was TORTOISESHELL! Come on Trivia teams...Dice played "Cheap Sunglasses" by ZZ Top. Have you ever seen ivory sunglasses? That's what I thought.

Ivory's worldwide ban didn't occur until 1989 when the United States and other countries joined together to try to put an end to the ivory trade. Despite these conservation efforts, the illegal ivory trade continues relatively unabated in many Asian countries as well as the United States and continuing to decemate worldwide elephant populations.

TUNES: Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" (featuring the University of Southern California Marching Band, "Spirit of Troy") kicked off the final round, delighting both Dice and GIRLS NIGHT. BATMAN & ROLO didn't need "Satellite" by Guster, but one of them has met the band several times causing Dice great envy. "Electric Worry" from Clutch was clutch, even if nobody needed it.

1.6.15 Cider Mill Teams/Trivia/Tunes Recap

1.6.15 CIDER MILL TRIVIA

Going to the Cider Mill is like going home. It's familiar. Comfortable, like it's always been there and always will be. I think that's what I appreciate about the Cider Mill the most. It's as though I get to gather every week with my Trivia friends and just relax and enjoy some great food, great people, great music, and, of course, great Trivia!

TEAMS: VAN DE GRAF & THE GENERATORS (85) needed just 3 seconds for the final round to put the competition away, sealing a well-deserved victory. FEMBOTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO (82) kicked off their 2015 Winter League campaign with a perfect final round after an up and down contest that hi-lighted their aggressive wagering strategy. TRIGGER HAPPY BUNNIES (81) eyed the tiger and KO'd the final question for a full 15 points, picking up our final prize.

BOX SQUAD (80) impressed throughout the night as they squared off against the competition and Dice, who repeatedly tried to flatten their squad to a square. CHIMP N' IT (76), our leaders through the first half and into the final round, monkeyed around on the final question and found a way to snatch defeat from almost certain victory...You're killing me Smalls! WAY UP THERE shook off their Trivia rust and delivered several of tonight's more creative wrong-but-oh-so-right answers. SCRATCH N' SNIFF clawed their way near the top of the leaderboard through 4 rounds, but failed to land on their feet after falling in the later rounds. 

TRIVIA: Fried chicken. If you ask Dice, it just doesn't get much better than fried chicken. This is 
especially true at the Cider Mill, which features the world-famous Fryer Tuck Chicken. 

Have you enjoyed IFC, better known as, Indiana Fried Chicken? No? Well, you could have, had Harland Sanders stayed in his state of birth. Instead, Colonel Sanders, a twice-honored Kentucky Colonel, created and served his now famous fried chicken from his Shell gas station in Corbin, Kentucky after failing at a variety of careers from working on the railroad to practicing law, a career he lost after a courtroom brawl with his client. In the early 1950's, Sanders recognized the franchise potential of his chicken and the first franchise was opened in South Salt Lake, Utah. By the time Sanders passed away in 1980 at the age of 90 after being diagnosed with leukemia, his KFC restaurant empire had expanded worldwide to more than 6,000 franchises in nearly 50 countries. 

TUNES: Dice has his Cake and he played them three times too... Dice felt Pearl Jam should make a rare Trivia appearance with "Yellow Ledbetter," but only a few teams were able to hi-light the correct answer. Aloe Blacc, The O'Jays, and Everlast were all money at halftime, and we kicked up our  heels to Postmodern Jukebox's vintage bluegrass cover of "Blurred Lines."

1.5.15 Malone's Teams/Trivia/Tunes Recap

1.5.15 MALONE'S CAFE - TRIVIA

TEAMS: Happy New Year Trivia teams and welcome back! New teams, new Trivia, new tunes...Life is good! BJ'S RIGHT BOOB (83) didn't need a wardrobe malfunction to give everyone a look-see at their comically humongous IQs. Snarling and smart, THE FIGHTING MONGOOSES (79) managed to set aside their differences on the final round to snag second place from a host of contenders. SIT UBU SIT (74) started 2015 the same as 2014 ended...being wicked smart and, as always, a "good dog."

Newcomers SPARKLY KITTY CATS (71) dazzled in their debut as they easily purred through tonight's contest. JV TEAM (68) started and finished strong, but couldn't wager enough points on their perfect final round after a disastrous fifth round. A splinter faction of BRB and TFM, OTTER POPS (65) froze up on the final round and just missed joining their comrades on the victory stand. CRAZY TEAM (53) is just that.

TRIVIA: Malone's is a "Specials" kind of venue if you know what I mean, but several teams got tripped up searching for which musical genre was started in Jamaica in the late 1950's combining elements of calypso and Caribbean mento with American jazz and early rhythm and blues....SKA! Fans of the genre enjoy ska's walking bassline and easy dance rhythms and know that ska's first wave was the dominant musical force in Jamaica through the 1960's and greatly influenced the development reggae at the end of the decade.

Ska's history can be traced to three distinct "waves". The first wave, featuring ska-lebrities PRINCE BUSTER, JIMMY CLIFF, and DUKE REID, was directly impacted as Jamaicans started to own radios capable of receiving radio broadcasts from the southern United States, particularly New Orleans, and began recreating the jazz and rock sounds while incorporating traditional Jamaican drum beats and rhythms. In Jamaica, first wave ska gave way to reggae and rocksteady as the 60's ended, but the second wave, frequently called English 2 Tone, developed in the UK in the late 1970's fusing ska's early Jamaican sounds with harder punk rock and new wave elements common in Europe. This second wave, which featured legendary ska bands THE SPECIALS, MADNESS, and THE SELECTOR, experienced moderate commercial success in the UK, but it wasn't until ska's third wave in the 80's and 90's that the genre enjoyed mass appeal. Bands such as THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES, REEL BIG FISH, NO DOUBT, and SUBLIME carried the new ska torch with a sound rooted in traditional ska, but characterized by stronger guitars and large horn and brass instrument sections.

TUNES: Looking at tonight's playlist, one might think half the questions were about ska and punk! REEL BIG FISH, SWINGIN' UTTERS, GREEN DAY, THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES, and GOLDFINGER thrilled the Malone's crowd. SALT-N-PEPA's "Push It" and a double-dip from the TALKING HEADS offered help to those that knew where to look for it.

Dice enjoys trying to accommodate all song requests, today playing a whopping EIGHT 80's TV theme songs for one of the Boobs. Dice dropped the theme songs from 21 JUMP STREET (performed by show actress Holly Robinson), THE FACTS OF LIFE (written and performed by 80's theme-song icon Gloria Loring), MIAMI VICE (composed and performed by synth-guru Jan Hammer), PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE, FAME (Irene Cara), GREATEST AMERICAN HERO (Joey Scarbury), THE DUKES OF HAZZARD (Waylon Jennings), and KNIGHT RIDER (composed by Stu Phillips whose other musical credits include songs for Battlestar Gallactica, The Monkees television show, and The Six-Million Dollar Man).
